義理と恩

義理（ぎりーGIRI）


social obligation

自分と何らかの社会的関係がある人、または恩を受けた人に対して返礼をする義務を言います。この義務を怠ると日本社会では信用を失います。

An obligation to return favors in certain social situations or to persons from whom one has received particular favors. Neglecting this obligation to reciprocate will often cause one to lose the trust of others in Japanese society.


恩（おんーON）

大変お世話になったり、贈り物をもらった人に対する感謝の気持ちが「恩」です。日本では恩に感じたら義理があると言うことで、何らかの形でお返しをしなければなりません。お歳暮（年末の贈り物）はその例です。

A feeling of gratitude toward a person from whom one has received a favor of gift, This feeling gives way to GIRI, or a sense of being obliged to return the favor or gift in some form or another. The custom of OSEIBO(or a year-end-gift) is a good example of expression of GIRI.
